How to Find Keyword Gaps Your Competitors Are Winning

SURFSIDE PPC NEWSLETTER

If you want to grow your organic search traffic, one of the best things you can do is figure out which keywords your competitors are ranking for that you are not.

These are called keyword gaps, and finding them gives you a clear roadmap of exactly where to focus your SEO efforts.

The good news? You can find them quickly using free tools you probably already have access to.

Here is the process.

Start by going into the Google Keyword Planner inside your Google Ads account. Type in your own website URL and pull keyword ideas. Download those results as a CSV file.

Next, take your website over to SpyFu (free plan works fine) and look up your top organic competitors. You want the businesses that are closest to what you do.

For each competitor, go back to the Keyword Planner, enter their website URL, and download their keyword ideas as a CSV file as well.

Once you have your file and two or three competitor files, upload all of them into Claude and ask for keyword gaps. A simple prompt works just fine. Something like: "Here is my website and here are two competitors. Help me find keyword gaps they are ranking for that I am not. Include search volume and bid data."

What makes this process so useful is not just the list of keywords you get back. It is the categories. Instead of handing a client 300 random keywords, you can identify the five or six topic areas where you are getting outranked and prioritize from there.

For example, if a competitor is getting thousands of monthly searches for a topic you have barely touched, that is your signal to start building content, pages, and tools around that topic right away.

If you already have content related to those keyword gaps, that is a sign you need to expand and deepen what you have, not just create something new.

This approach works for SEO, but it also translates directly into PPC keyword research. Wherever your competitors are relevant and you are not, that is an opportunity.
