What's up everyone and welcome to the Surfside PPC Newsletter!
Four of this week's five changes are about numbers you are already looking at being wrong. Your ChatGPT referral traffic appeared to fall off a cliff last week and the traffic never actually left. Your Demand Gen costs are no longer final for 60 days instead of three weeks. And in February, Google stops protecting your Search budget from Display on its own.
None of that shows up as an alert. The report just renders, the number just sits there, and it looks exactly as trustworthy as it did the week before. You find out later, when somebody asks you to explain a drop you cannot explain, or when your spend moved between networks and nothing in the account changed.
Here is what changed, starting with the one that has a date attached.
Google Ads added channel priority controls, and February 2027 is the date to watch. You can now rank channels as High or Low priority and cap what the low-priority ones take, including a 0 percent option that blocks a channel entirely inside Performance Max. The catch is that every channel defaults to High priority, so when Google retires the current Search and Display allocation in February, your spend can shift without you touching anything. Setting Display to Low priority at 50 percent holds your current setup.

ChatGPT stopped tagging its links and your traffic report went wrong. After GPT-6 rolled out, ChatGPT dropped its UTM parameter, so from October 9 those visits landed in analytics as direct traffic. OpenAI confirmed it on October 14 and a fix started rolling out October 15, but the week in between is permanently mislabeled. Annotate October 8 through 15 before anyone reads that period as lost traffic.

Google put more inline links into AI Mode and AI Overviews. More links, placed higher in responses, plus expanded article carousels and a tested section for official sources. Search Console still shows no click data for any of it, and it gives every link in an overview the same position, so moving up in the answer does not move your reported position at all.

Demand Gen cost adjustments now run for 60 days instead of three weeks. If a Target CPA or Target ROAS campaign underperforms Google's own predictions during learning, Google can lower your costs after the fact. There is no setting, no notification, and no separate credit line, which means early Demand Gen numbers stay provisional far longer than most people wait before judging a campaign.

Google Ads lead forms let you mark which answers count as qualified. Inside a custom question you can now tick the answers that represent a lead worth calling, up to 12 per question, managed on the Leads page. It was spotted in accounts rather than announced, so availability is uneven and nobody has confirmed whether it feeds Smart Bidding yet.

If you only do one thing this week, open your analytics and annotate October 8 through 15. That week of ChatGPT traffic is going to look like a loss to anyone who reads the report later, including you in three months, and the note takes about 30 seconds.
